About Laura

I believe that anyone can become a confident and productive writer. Customized coaching is the fastest and most rewarding way to resolve your questions and improve your practice. Laura Brown is a New York-based writing coach and business writer. She has over 25 years’ experience providing customized coaching in business writing and consulting on a variety of business writing projects. Laura has served as a writing trainer and consultant in the executive search, private equity, consulting, and marketing industries, among others.

Laura is the author of the forthcoming book How to Write Anything: a Practical Guide to Everything You’ll Ever Have to Write—at Work, at School, and in Your Personal Life (coming from W. W. Norton in 2013).

Laura has an extensive background in writing teaching and online course design. She taught writing at Columbia University for five years,
and business and technical writing at Iona College for ten. She collaborated with e-learning visionary Roger Schank and Columbia University on a series of Web-based business writing courses. She has worked on a variety of corporate training programs with online learning companies Cognitive Arts, KLi Learning Corporation, and Socratic Arts.

As a stand-up trainer, Laura has provided group writing instruction to a variety of organizations. She also participated in training New York City 911 operators when the City transitioned to a Windows-based dispatch system. She developed and delivered seminars in e-mail etiquette for AOL-Time Warner. At Columbia University, Laura developed and taught a 15-hour seminar called Managing the Academic Experience for adult students returning to college.

Laura has special expertise in working with clients who are not native English speakers and specializes in helping executives from other countries adapt to American business writing conventions. She served for three years as English Communication Advisor for the Wharton School’s Global Chinese Business Initiative. She has also worked with global companies developing programs to facilitate communication between their US and India employees.

In addition to training and coaching, Laura is an accomplished writer. She has extensive experience writing white papers, case studies, articles, and Web content for clients. She has also worked as a ghostwriter and collaborator on business books on topics from marketing to management to e-commerce to commercial real estate.

Laura holds an M.A. in Drama from the University of London and a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. In her spare time, Laura works as a dramaturg for Red Bull Theater in New York.
